How to Upgrade Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS to 24.04 LTS: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted on March 4, 2026

Upgrading your operating system is like giving your computer a brand-new engine and a fresh coat of paint without buying a new machine. The jump from Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS to the new 24.04 LTS version is a major milestone. This guide will help you navigate the technical changes and ensure your transition is as smooth as possible.

Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS is built upon the rock-solid foundation of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. In the world of Linux, “LTS” stands for Long Term Support, which means the developers promise to provide security updates and maintenance for several years. This version is particularly exciting because it integrates the Linux kernel 6.8. Think of the kernel as the “brain” of the operating system that tells the hardware—like your keyboard, screen, and processor—how to work together. Version 6.8 brings much better support for the latest laptops, improved power management to save battery life, and patches from the Kernel Self-Protection Project (KSPP) to keep hackers away from your private data.

One of the most significant technical shifts in this release is the move to Wayland as the default display server. For years, Linux systems used an older technology called Xorg. Wayland is much more modern; it helps reduce “input lag” (the delay between moving your mouse and seeing the cursor move) and makes animations feel much smoother. More importantly, Wayland is more secure because it prevents one application from “spying” on what is happening in another window. While most of your apps will work perfectly, some older games or specialized screen-recording tools might need a quick setting change to be fully compatible.

Before you click that upgrade button, preparation is the most important step. You must back up your important school projects, photos, and files to an external drive or a cloud service. Even though the upgrade process is designed to be safe, a sudden power outage or a lost internet connection during the update could cause problems. Once your files are safe, you should open your Terminal—the black box where you type commands—and run two specific commands: sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade. This ensures that your current 22.04 system is perfectly healthy and up-to-date before it tries to transform into version 24.04.

The actual upgrade is handled by the Pop!_OS Update Manager. You can find this in your System Settings. When the notification appears, the system will begin downloading several gigabytes of data. This includes the new GNOME 46 desktop environment. GNOME 46 is the “face” of your computer, and this version includes better accessibility features and new “widgets” that make it easier to stay organized. During the installation phase, the computer will be very busy replacing old system libraries with new ones. It is vital that you do not turn off your computer during this time. Once the process finishes, the system will ask to restart. After the reboot, you can verify your new version by typing uname -r in the terminal to see your new kernel version.

For those who love to build things, Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS remains a paradise for developers. The Pop!_Shop has been refined to make installing tools like VS Code, Python, or Blender incredibly easy. If you use an NVIDIA graphics card for gaming or video editing, the AppCenter makes it simple to install the specific drivers needed to get the best performance. The system also comes with Zsh shell support in the terminal, which is a more advanced way to interact with your computer compared to the standard Bash shell found on many other systems.

Security and performance go hand-in-hand in this update. The developers have optimized “CPU scheduling,” which is basically a fancy way of saying the computer is now smarter at deciding which tasks deserve the most power. This means if you are playing a game while having twenty browser tabs open, the system will prioritize the game so it doesn’t lag. On the security side, tools like AppArmor and SELinux work in the background to create “sandboxes” around your applications, ensuring that even if you accidentally download a buggy app, it cannot easily damage the rest of your system.

If you encounter any issues, such as a favorite app not opening, do not worry. Most problems can be solved by checking for updates in the Pop!_Shop or by visiting the official community forums. Sometimes, third-party apps need a fresh installation to recognize the new system libraries. Upgrading to Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS is a fantastic way to keep your technology modern, secure, and fast. By following these steps and understanding the technology behind the screen, you are taking a great step toward becoming a Linux power user.

Moving to a new operating system version is always an adventure. While the technical changes like the 6.8 kernel and Wayland integration are impressive, the true value lies in the stability and security you gain for the years ahead. I recommend that you take your time, ensure your battery is plugged in if you are using a laptop, and enjoy exploring all the new settings and tools. Staying updated is one of the best habits you can develop in the digital world. If you follow the terminal commands and backup procedures mentioned, your transition to Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS will be a great success.
