How tto Enable DLSS 4 & 5 for Your GPU

Posted on February 1, 2026

Ever played a video game and wished it looked even better while also running super smoothly? That’s where DLSS comes in! DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling, and it’s a really cool technology from NVIDIA that makes games look fantastic and run faster, especially on powerful graphics cards. Now, NVIDIA has released DLSS 4 and DLSS 5, which are even more amazing! This guide will explain what they are and how to turn them on if you have a compatible computer.

What is DLSS and Why Does it Matter?

Imagine your computer is trying to draw a picture really, really fast. It needs to figure out what each pixel (tiny dot) on the screen should look like. The higher the resolution (like 1080p, 1440p, or 4K), the more pixels there are, and the harder it is for your computer to draw them all quickly. This can lead to lower frame rates – meaning the game looks choppy and not as smooth.

DLSS is like having a super-smart helper. Instead of drawing every pixel at the full resolution, your graphics card (GPU) draws the game at a lower resolution. Then, using something called ‘deep learning’ (which is a type of artificial intelligence), the GPU uses its knowledge from training on thousands of high-resolution images to guess what the higher-resolution pixels should look like. It then ‘upscales’ the image, making it look close to the full resolution, but with much less work for your computer.

DLSS 4: Frame Generation – A Game Changer!

DLSS 4 takes things to a whole new level. It doesn’t just upscale the image; it generates entirely new frames. Here’s how it works:

  1. Optical Flow Accelerator: DLSS 4 introduces a new piece of hardware called the Optical Flow Accelerator. This accelerator analyzes how objects are moving in the game, figuring out exactly where they’ll be in the next frame.
  2. Frame Generation: The GPU then creates a completely new frame based on this movement information. This new frame is not directly rendered by the game engine; it’s generated by the GPU.
  3. Blending: Finally, DLSS 4 blends the original frame from the game engine with the newly generated frame. This creates a smoother, more fluid visual experience.

Essentially, DLSS 4 can double or even triple your frame rate! This means your games will look and feel much more responsive, especially in demanding scenes.

DLSS 5: Ray Reconstruction – Brighter, Sharper, More Realistic Lighting

DLSS 5 focuses on improving ray tracing. Ray tracing is a technique that makes lighting and reflections in games look incredibly realistic. However, it’s also very demanding on your computer’s resources.

DLSS 5 uses AI to reconstruct ray-traced images. It analyzes the existing ray-traced data and uses its knowledge to fill in the gaps, making the lighting even more accurate and detailed. This results in brighter, sharper, and more realistic lighting effects without sacrificing performance.

Do You Have a Supported GPU?

Not all graphics cards support DLSS 4 or DLSS 5. You’ll need an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series GPU to use DLSS 4. DLSS 5 is exclusive to RTX 60 series cards.

How to Enable DLSS 4 & 5

Enabling DLSS is usually pretty straightforward. Here’s a general guide, but the exact steps might vary slightly depending on the game:

  1. Open the Game’s Settings: Launch the game you want to play and go to its settings menu. Look for a section called ‘Graphics,’ ‘Video,’ or something similar.
  2. Find the DLSS Option: Within the graphics settings, you should see an option labeled ‘DLSS’ or ‘NVIDIA DLSS.’
  3. Enable DLSS: Toggle the DLSS option to ‘On.’
  4. Choose a Quality Preset: You’ll usually have several quality presets to choose from, such as ‘Quality,’ ‘Balanced,’ ‘Performance,’ or ‘Ultra Performance.’
  • Quality: Prioritizes image quality. Frame rates will be good, but not as high as with other presets.
  • Balanced: A good compromise between image quality and performance.
  • Performance: Prioritizes frame rates. The image might be slightly less sharp, but the game will run much faster.
  • Ultra Performance: Maximizes frame rates, but the image quality will be noticeably reduced. This is best for very demanding games or if you want the absolute highest frame rates possible.
  1. Experiment: Try different presets to see which one gives you the best balance of image quality and performance for your specific game and computer.

Important Notes:

  • Game Support: DLSS 4 and 5 require the game developers to specifically implement support for them. Not all games have DLSS support yet, but more and more games are adding it.
  • Drivers: Make sure you have the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers installed. You can download the latest drivers from the NVIDIA website.
  • Resolution: DLSS works best at higher resolutions (1440p or 4K). At lower resolutions (like 1080p), the benefits might not be as noticeable.
  • Motion Blur: Some people find that DLSS can sometimes introduce a slight amount of motion blur. If you notice this, try adjusting the motion blur settings in the game.

DLSS 4 and 5 are truly amazing technologies that can significantly improve your gaming experience. By enabling them, you can enjoy smoother frame rates, better image quality, and more realistic lighting – all without sacrificing performance! So, go ahead and give it a try – your games will thank you for it!
