When to Use ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude for Beginners

Posted on January 20, 2026

If you are currently using just one AI tool for every single homework assignment or personal project, you might be making things harder for yourself. Imagine trying to eat soup with a fork; it is possible, but it is certainly not efficient. In the world of Artificial Intelligence, different tools have different superpowers. This guide will explain exactly which AI model you should use for specific tasks so you can build a clear mental model and work much smarter, not harder.

Let us begin with the category of “Everyday AI,” which includes the famous chatbots you have likely heard of. First on the list is ChatGPT. While other models are catching up in terms of raw intelligence, ChatGPT remains the king of obedience. In simple terms, this means it is the best model for following complex instructions without getting confused. If you have a long checklist of requirements for a project, ChatGPT is the safest choice because it drops fewer balls than its competitors. For example, if you ask an AI to optimize a prompt for itself, ChatGPT will generate a long, detailed response because it checks every single requirement. Other models might take shortcuts or decide they know better than you. Therefore, if your task has many moving parts and getting one step wrong would ruin the whole result, you should always start with ChatGPT.

Next, we have Google’s Gemini. While ChatGPT wins on following rules, Gemini dominates in an area called multimodality. This is a technical term meaning the AI can understand different types of media like video, audio, images, and text all at the same time. Gemini has a massive “context window” of one million tokens, which allows it to process huge amounts of information that would crash other computers. For instance, you could screen record a video of yourself solving a math problem, upload that video to Gemini, and ask it to write a step-by-step tutorial based on your actions. It can “watch” the video and “listen” to the audio to create text. If you have a recording of a class lecture, a slide deck, and a photo of a whiteboard, Gemini is the only tool that can combine all three sources to create a perfect summary.

The third major player in everyday AI is Claude. This tool has a very specific superpower: producing high-quality first drafts and writing computer code. Even if you do not know how to program, developers agree that Claude writes functional code on the first try more consistently than anyone else. If you needed to create a simple website or a script to organize your files, you would simply describe the problem to Claude in a paragraph, and it would likely generate the correct code immediately. Furthermore, Claude is exceptional at creative writing. It sounds much more human and less robotic than other AI models. If you want to write an essay that mimics a specific style, you can upload examples of your previous writing, and Claude will learn your “voice” to help you polish your work. A great workflow is to use ChatGPT for brainstorming and outlining, but use Claude to write the final paragraphs.

Now we move to “Specialist AI,” which are tools designed for very specific jobs. A common mistake is thinking tools like Perplexity are the same as ChatGPT. They are not. ChatGPT is built for reasoning and thinking, while Perplexity is built for fetching information. It functions like a search engine but much faster and more accurate. If you are planning a trip and need to know if a specific restaurant is open right now, or if you need to find a scientific fact for a science paper, you should use Perplexity. It browses the live internet to give you up-to-date answers, whereas standard chatbots might rely on older data. Think of it as a replacement for Google Search when you need a direct answer immediately.

Finally, we have NotebookLM. This tool is unique because it acts like a “walled garden.” Its superpower is that it only answers questions based on the documents you give it. This virtually eliminates “hallucinations,” which is the technical term for when AI makes things up. If you are studying for a history test, you can upload your textbook chapters to NotebookLM. Then, you can ask it questions, and it will answer only using the information from your textbook. This makes it the perfect tool for fact-checking. Before you submit an assignment, you can upload your draft and your source materials to NotebookLM and ask it to flag any claims that are not supported by your sources. This ensures your work is accurate and grounded in truth.

To synthesize these insights, you do not necessarily need to pay for every subscription, but you should use the right tool for the job. Start with ChatGPT for complex logic and instructions. Switch to Gemini when you need to analyze videos or massive files. Use Claude when you need to write code or polish a creative essay. For research, rely on Perplexity to find facts and NotebookLM to verify them. By treating these AI models as a team of specialists rather than one general tool, you will drastically improve your productivity and the quality of your output.
