What is Windows 11 Cross Device Resume?

Posted on January 31, 2026

Windows 11 Cross Device Resume is a productivity feature in Windows 11 that allows users to pick up where they left off on their Android devices, enabling a seamless transition of active applications and files from a smartphone to a PC via the Microsoft ecosystem.

Although Android app support via Windows Subsystem for Android has been discontinued, Microsoft has proven that cross-platform integration can still function effectively, including through a feature called Cross Device Resume in Windows 11. Previously, this feature was quite limited, but with recent enhancements, users can now continue their activities from an Android smartphone to Windows 11 more smoothly.

This feature was first announced in May 2025, when it was initially limited to files stored in OneDrive. Users could receive a notification on their PC to open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents that had been recently accessed on a smartphone within a five-minute window. However, with the new update for Windows 11 Build 26100.7701 and 26200.7701 released to the Release Preview Channel, support has been expanded to include popular integrated applications.

These include:

  • Spotify: Resuming music or podcast playback.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Opening documents being worked on in mobile Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
  • Microsoft Edge: Continuing active web browsing sessions from the smartphone.
  • Vivo Browser: The built-in browser from Vivo can now perform the same function.
  • Files Opened in Copilot: For devices from Samsung, Honor, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, files opened via Copilot on a phone can be continued on a PC.

The mechanism remains the same: when a user leaves a supported application on Android, a notification appears on the Windows 11 PC—provided both devices are connected to the same Microsoft account and the same network. By simply clicking the notification, the activity can be immediately resumed on the larger screen.

While this feature is currently limited to Android users, it is a significant step forward, especially for those who frequently switch focus between their Windows 11 PC and their smartphone. With the addition of Phone Link support, connectivity and productivity are expected to increase further. What do you think? Have you ever used this feature? Feel free to comment below.
